4 Ways to Show Kindness to Elders

Home Care in Cumming GA

August 25th is the first day of Be Kind to Humankind Week. This week was dedicated to recognizing and reflecting on the kind acts people have made to one another. Someone who would greatly appreciate acts of kindness shown towards them are the elderly.

Over the course of your lifetime, this person has probably gone above and beyond to care for you. Now is the perfect time to show how much they mean to you with small gestures of love and respect. Even if the elder is unable to care for themselves due to a mental or physical illness, causing them to need assistance from a home care provider, they will still appreciate these kind acts. Here are 4 ways you can show the senior how much they are a valued and loved member of your family.

  1. Remember your manners. If you assist with some of the caregiving responsibilities, it may be easy to forget that they are your elder and should be treated as such. Older adults need to be shown the respect they deserve, and one way to do so is by being polite. If they are speaking, listen intently before beginning to speak yourself. If you are frustrated or stressed, avoid taking it out on the elder. Instead, talk in a calm, respectful tone.
  2. Learn to listen. When your loved one has something to share, make sure you are listening. In fact, lean in and maintain eye contact in order to let them know you are listening to every word they have to say. When the senior is done speaking, ask questions or make comments about what was said to let your loved one know that you were listening.
  3. Ask for their advice. You may be all grown up, but that does not mean you will not need or mother, father, or grandparent anymore. Older adults actually want to be asked for their opinion as a way to make them feel important and as if you care what they have to say.
  4. Stop by for a visit. Simply taking the time out of your schedule to visit the elder will brighten their day. Seniors who live by themselves often end up feeling isolated due to a lack of socialization. A caregiver can help by spending time with them during the day, but the elder would also appreciate visits from other family members. If possible, schedule a time each day or week to stop by. This will give your loved one something to look forward to.

Older adults deserve respect from younger generations and these four tips will help you do just that.
