If your senior parent has Alzheimer’s, it can be difficult to help them stay healthy. As the Alzheimer’s progresses seniors may not remember why they need to do things like stay active so that they can avoid falls and stay mobile.
Alzheimer’s care can help seniors with Alzheimer’s stay healthy. Alzheimer’s care takes a holistic approach to the health and well-being of seniors with Alzheimer’s and provides the support that they need to be physically and emotionally healthy. Some of the activities that seniors with Alzheimer’s are encouraged to do to help them stay mobile are:
Gentle Exercise Classes Designed For Seniors With Alzheimer’s
Seniors with Alzheimer’s may not be able to follow a typical exercise class. They may not be able to understand rapid-fire commands or be able to do fast movements. But exercise classes designed for seniors with Alzheimer’s that feature chair exercises, repetitive movements, and slow transitions can help seniors be active and hang onto their mobility.
Walking Groups
Seniors with Alzheimer’s can walk safely in walking groups with other seniors. The group may be lead by a home care provider or led by another senior. There’s safety in numbers, and seniors that are walking in a group are less likely to wander off or get confused about where they are and panic.
Dancing
Dancing is a fun activity for seniors. Music can trigger emotions and memories for seniors with Alzheimer’s so listening to music and dancing can be a great way for them to get exercise. Dancing can also improve mood and boost happiness, which is also great for seniors with Alzheimer’s.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is designed to help seniors with Alzheimer’s improve their muscle memory for everyday tasks. It can help seniors by encouraging them to do things like walk and participate in activities that will help them do things like pickup items, dress themselves, and eat on their own.
Modified Sports
Sports have a lot of benefits for seniors, including seniors with Alzheimer’s. Modified sports that take into account the limitations of seniors with Alzheimer’s are a great way for seniors to get the activity they need to be healthy.
Yoga for Seniors
Gentle yoga classes tailored to seniors’ needs can improve flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Look for classes that focus on mindfulness and gentle movements, as these can be particularly beneficial for individuals with Alzheimer’s.
Swimming
Water-based activities are gentle on joints and muscles while providing resistance for a full-body workout. Water aerobics or swimming can be adapted for seniors with Alzheimer’s, promoting mobility in a safe and supportive environment.
Balloon Volleyball
Balloon volleyball can be played indoors, which makes it perfect for the winter. This low-impact activity improves coordination and encourages social interaction. Use a soft, lightweight balloon to reduce the risk of injury. Balloon Volleyball is a fun activity that seniors who have mobility challenges usually enjoy because it’s gentle movement but active enough to be fun.
Therapeutic Walking Trails
Some parks and cities have walking trails designed for seniors that are paved, have low or no hills, and have big arrows or signs so that seniors always can find their way to the start if they want to. These trails also have benches at intervals so seniors can sit and rest. Check with the local parks department to see if there are any of these trails where your senior parent lives.
Brain-Body Exercises
Engage in activities that combine cognitive and physical components, promoting both mental and physical well-being. This can include exercises that involve following simple routines, memory games with movement, or activities that incorporate hand-eye coordination. These activities can help seniors keep their muscles strong so they can be mobile as long as possible.

Valerie has the unique experience with home care as she has experienced it from both ends of the spectrum, as a caregiver and as needing care herself as a cancer survivor. Valerie says, “Taking care of someone you love is a physically, mentally and demanding labor of love.Taking care of my mom was the hardest thing I have ever done. It has given me an insight and perspective not many people understand unless you are doing it or have done it.I loved taking care of my mom.I love helping others take care of their love ones too.And now that I’ve been sick, it’s given me a whole new level of empathy and understanding for those who are sick and need help.”
Valerie’s schedule varies daily, but she loves visiting with our clients, families, caregivers, our network partners and being in the office.Says Valerie, “Every day is different, but I wake up excited about what we do, inspired by our team, clients and caregivers.I strive to be a resource to the community.I love my team and I love what we do every day. I like to think my mom would be proud.”
