Elder care is a support service that helps seniors live independently in their own homes. Many seniors want to stay in their familiar homes as they get older, but they may need help because of medical conditions or physical challenges. If your senior parent wants to live independently, but they have poor health or mobility challenges, elder care can make it possible for them to continue living at home.
Family members often worry about their senior parent’s ability to take care of themselves at home. If your senior parent has limited mobility or if they suffer from problems like low vision, arthritis, hearing loss, or other medical conditions they could have a hard time doing all the things necessary to take care of themselves at home. That’s where elder care can help.
Having elder care means that a care provider will visit your senior on a regular schedule. The care provider will help your senior parent do all the tasks that are necessary for them to live safely and comfortably at home like:
Cooking Meals
Seniors that are living at home often have a hard time cooking healthy meals for themselves. Sometimes they just don’t want to cook a whole meal for one person. Or, they may have a hard time physically doing things like stirring things, cutting things, opening cans, and washing fruits and vegetables.
A home care provider can cook with your senior parent so that your senior parent can still be part of the meal creation. They can do as much as they can, and the care provider will do the rest. And if they don’t want to do any of the cooking that’s fine. Their care provider will make them nutritious, delicious, and healthy meals.
Cleaning Up
It is amazing how fast clutter can happen in a home. Clutter can create a safety hazard for seniors. Seniors are more likely to fall when the home is cluttered or not clean. An elder care provider can tidy up books, magazines, and other items to keep the home clutter free. They can organize mail, fold up blankets, make beds, and make sure the home is safe for your senior parent. Elder care providers can also do light housework for your senior parent.
Laundry
Having fresh clean clothes and linens is important for your senior parent’s mental health as well as their hygiene. No senior can feel good about themselves or confident when they have dirty clothes. A home care provider can do laundry on a regular basis and make sure your senior parent has clean clothes, fresh clean blankets and sheets, and soft towels.
Trash
A lot of people don’t think about how difficult taking the trash out can be for seniors. Tying the top of a trash bag, lifting a heavy bag out of the can, and throwing it in a trash cart or bin can be physically challenging. And dragging the heavy cart of trash can be too much for seniors who have mobility issues, especially in bad weather.
A care provider can make sure that your senior’s home is trash-free and take the trash out to the curb on trash day so that your senior parent doesn’t have to struggle with that chore.

Valerie has the unique experience with home care as she has experienced it from both ends of the spectrum, as a caregiver and as needing care herself as a cancer survivor. Valerie says, “Taking care of someone you love is a physically, mentally and demanding labor of love.Taking care of my mom was the hardest thing I have ever done. It has given me an insight and perspective not many people understand unless you are doing it or have done it.I loved taking care of my mom.I love helping others take care of their love ones too.And now that I’ve been sick, it’s given me a whole new level of empathy and understanding for those who are sick and need help.”
Valerie’s schedule varies daily, but she loves visiting with our clients, families, caregivers, our network partners and being in the office.Says Valerie, “Every day is different, but I wake up excited about what we do, inspired by our team, clients and caregivers.I strive to be a resource to the community.I love my team and I love what we do every day. I like to think my mom would be proud.”
